Why does Google do this. There isn't any need for so much data just to link a resource

They're storing information about the app's current state, as well as tracking/analytic info. If you don't care about linking to an identical view and just want to link to a specific location, you can trim the URL down to just the coordinates like this: https://www.google.com/maps/place/@55.9285659,-4.7106362,17z...

They do offer a link for sharing as an alternative: https://maps.app.goo.gl/HZMATsSJJhpcejoJ8

That's just another shortlink though.

You can try the original then:

https://maps.app.goo.gl/?link=https://www.google.com/maps/pl...

It did warn you the destination is HZMAT at least...
